Microsoft Boot Camp'09 - Hyderabad -We saw, we came & We got booted

Microsoft Boot Camp'09 - 6th March -8 thMarch'09, IDC- Hyderabad

Folks, there are times when you know you are living a dream -the moments spent during the boot camp were one of them. I feel privileged as a Microsoft Student Partner to witness India Development Center(Microsoft India's headquarter) and witness some of the latest technologies like Windows 7 from Microsoft. As I am writing this blog, my brains are resting in tranquility. I can find myself giving a session on Microsoft Popfly, amidst a crowd of 165 techies. That was an experience in itself ! I already feel a part of Microsoft. :D

Here's an attempt to blog the largest boot camp in India and perhaps the largest ever in the world.

6th March'09
I sauntered down to the Reception, and collected my room keys for 405. The ambience and suites at Ella Suite were simply amazing. A special mention of the transparent shower cubicle and the Sawariya white bath robes :P

The shuttle bus from the hotel took us to the IDC. The MSP's from the third year, who had registered for the Internship test gave their paper, while the rest of us got engaged in a skit - Ad MAD show. We were divided into 3 teams, and we were supposed to prepare our act promoting any microsoft technology. We prepared a skit on Windows surface, and I was supposed to act like a Mad Robo. Yeah, a robo - That was exactly how I felt numb and lifeless- like a soul without a heart. There was just one face, in the crowd whose touch could bring me back to life.

We enjoyed our meals at the IDC, though I was not able to eat much because of my sickness. I liked the biryani though. I was rather surprised to see Rasgullas(An Indian dessert) at the buffet table. (The sight of the rasgulla, was enough to feel me nostalgic. I was again lost in memories.)

We all hit to our bed by 12, and were damn tired after all the journey and sessions.

7th March'09

The morning at IDC started with a keynote from Pratima Amonkar(Director-Academia, Microsoft) who told us about the hierarchy, different departments and functional structure of Microsoft. followed by a session on SQL Server 2008 by the MSIT Team. Most of us couldn't digest a single word. It was rather too complicated and dull like any other backend language.

But the next spellbounding session by Abhinav Gujjar(MGSI) on Windows Mobile Application Development charged all of us. That followed with a group photoshoot and lunch. The networking lunch was a great time to interact with microsoft employees and get our queries resolved.

The evening witnessed sessions on Cloud Computing by Archis Gore and Application Security by Varun Sharma. The last scheduled event for the day were sessions on Windows7, IE8 & a 9 question survey on lives of students by the three Musketeers. ;-)

They also announced a party in the night for all of us, which was pretty expected. I had already spilled the beans in the morning, that they were organising a party for all of us.(Courtesy- the hotel authorities whom I had overheard the same morning).I grinned mischeviously. This is gonna be fun and it surely was. The MSP's rocked the floor and danced all night to the worst songs ever played.(Mr. DJ- you really sucked.) I also tried a few steps of salsa with two pretty MSP's.(I missed my salsa partner badly this time.)

I stayed back till 3 am the same night, I was tired and my feet's were swelling in pain. But I had to complete my ppt by the next morning and plan out what to demonstrate. I also decided that I won't be preparing my session beforehand- and would rather take it at the spur of the moment.

Most of the MSP's were awake that night- playing dumb charades.( Yes, the game is a dumb as it's name and I always give it a skip.) It always reminds me of some sidey bollywood film.

8th March'09
I wake up the next morning in the fuzziest state of mind since high school. I was completey booted and my eyes were puffy as pincushions. I have been working last night on my laptop on those popfly presentations. I looked at my watch, it was almost 8am. Me and my roomate had overslept..Damn ! I was really late, and the worst part is I hadn't packed my bags. We had been instructed to check out our room by 8am.

On Reaching IDC, we were given a special briefing on the MSP Program and other microsoft academic initiatives followed by some cool demo's by our fellow MSP's on Microsoft Robotics and Visual Studio. Then the time came for me to give a session on Mashups using Microsoft Popfly, which went pretty well .(Considering me a rookie and it was my first, and yeah the microphone kept on malfunctiong :P).

I was showcasing a web 2.0 demo on a mashup, when I started feeling dizzy and the flashes started coming in. I was no longer at the IDC seminar hall, I was walking with her on a cold winter morning and the maples leaves were rustling down the lawn. I was hit back to reality, when I looked into her eyes again. She had donned my favorite green jacket, and was sitting in the third row looking demure, just like an angel and her deep alluring eyes stared at me rather ludriciously. I couldn't get my eyes off her beautiful dimples and the familiar mole on her right child.

My pop began to fly :D and it was an amazing feeling. Overall, The feedback was good. And I realised how cool it is to leverage such a platform and gain some confidence for the upcoming sessions and HOL's that I plan to take in my college. I enjoyed the arc lights- ten minutes of fame as I say :D.

I had 6 hours left for my flight back to mumbai. Instead of heading over to the snow-world and sight seeing, we preffered to stay back at Ella Suties. Some of the MSP's from mumbai and vellore(That includes me) enjoyed our last few hours in the pool.

The boot camp was fun, except a few goof up's. :P

It is difficult to blog my journey back to mumbai. A one hour drive from Ella suite to Hyderabad airport, saw me going back in time. Me and Anand got hold of a beer on our way to the airport. I felt like Aamir Khan from Ghajini, and the song Kaise Mujhe Tum Mil gaye kept humming. (I know this sounds cheesy and dumb, but that is the fact- the song was so stuck in my head and the beer made me feel more dazzled.) I kissed her pic for the last time and saw everything changing, as I stepped out of my cab and boarded my flight. It was time to bid adieu to the city of pearls and my dreams.

P.S:- A Special thanks to the Pune User group(& Anuja, Srishti) for always being around, whenever I felt out of place and my roomie from kolkatta who was very kind and co-operative. And ofcourse the three Microsoft Musketeers. Thanks Siddharth, Mark & Reza Sir. You guys are rockstars. Thank you Jayesh, Sanket, Samiran, Anand for being a perfect travel mates.
On a sadder note, I missed a chance to interact with a svelte beauty from the North;-) I hope she is not reading this.. :P

Just one complain from Microsoft- I missed the bubble bath:D. And Why were girls given the elegant suite with balcony, a bath tub, drawing room & kitchen.(Did I tell you I am a good cook as well. :D) This is so biased.

Looking forward to the next boot camp, where I will get a chance to give a shot at the Internship Test and ofcourse mentor the new MSP female brigade. :P

Signing off for now,
Masoom Tulsiani

Microsoft Student Partner - Now it's my time to shine

Collaborate ... Innovate ... Celebrate

It sounds too good to believe . Folks, I have been selected as a Microsoft Student Partner via an all India selection process and I am heading for a one week boot camp training at Microsoft Campus, Hyderabad.

Okay, now what is this Microsoft Student Partner, that has been buzzing around Shah and Anchor Engineering College, Mumbai for a while now.

Microsoft Student Partner's is a worldwide program, to sponsor students majoring in disciplines related to technology. MSP program attempts to enhance students' employability by offering training in skills not usually taught in academia, including knowledge in various Microsoft technologies.

Microsoft is looking for future innovators. Through the Microsoft Student Ambassador Program also called as Student Partners/Rockstar, Microsoft is giving an opportunity for computer science and Information Technology students to be a liaison between Microsoft and your university. Ambassadors plan and host a few events during the school year, introduce students to new Microsoft products and features, and act as a campus contact for Microsoft.

How I became a MSP? Here goes my dream story.

It was late November'09, when I saw a glossy pin-up poster of Microsoft at our notice board. The name' Microsoft' somehow caught my eye and I knew this program was meant for me. I informed some of my friends, and later filled an online Application form at the website. One of my special friend, got shortlisted and qualified via the Written exam which consisted of an Aptitude and C programming testand Group Discussion. I was on top of the world, coz I knew it would change her life in many ways, that . Whereas, my application was not short-listed since I had appeared for an equivalent diploma course in computer technology rather than grade 12.

I didn't lost hope, and applied for the MSP Challenge round, where we had to qualify for the second round of the Imagine cup and drive some entries. After a tough stringent round of online IT quizes, I finally made it to the Round 2 of the Imagine Cup. And following that, I got an e-mail for a telephonic interview which went pretty well then expected. I was bombarded with questions on ASP.Net, C & Java.

Now when I look back upon my journey, All I can say is that love paved the path for my success. I was determined to become one, I won't call it a destiny or sheer luck coz I knew deep inside that there was a MSP hidden inside me. ;-)

As of now, my first and foremost task is to form a Student Tech Club in my college.

If you are passionate about technology and looking for a unique opportunity to share that talent, and if you are a good communicator, then Microsoft looking for you. Motivated non-final-year undergraduate and post graduate students from across India are invited to apply for the Microsoft Student Partner Program. In exchange for sharing your knowledge and participating in fun activities on your campus, you will be getting a whole host of benefits, the chance to connect to like-minded people and gain real-world experience to add to your resume. The program allows selected students to work along with professionals from Microsoft and to be a student representative for Microsoft on their college campus. You get to conduct sessions, workshops and hands on lab in your college. It also gives them access to the free licensed microsoft softwares and an opportunity to explore and discover a whole new range of technologies. There are All India boot camp's every year for MSP's, to ramp your professional skills. Plus, the best Student Partners also get the opportunity to apply for jobs at Microsoft.

If you want to become a Microsoft Student Partner, you can wait for the announcement for the next all India selection exam and apply at .

Microsoft Imagine Cup - FAQ on IT challenge

The topic for this month's IT Challenge is Application Technologies and because this is the quiz 3A, the test gets tougher. The topics for this month are SQL Server 2005 & Exchange 2007.

What are Application Technologies?

We all have come across SQL Server in our academic curriculum. It is the leading database platform in the IT Industry and in-depth programming knowledge of Structured Query Language or Oracle 9i is a must for any software project in the IT Environment.

Here are some links that should get you started.

1. E-Reference Libraries from Microsoft Press

The Microsoft IT Academy Program sponsors a limited number of 6-month subscriptions to the IT Professional E-Reference Library. These subscriptions are offered free of charge to registered IT Challenge & Imagine cup participants, and they are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The IT Professional E-Reference Library gives you electronic access to read and search over 100 Microsoft Press books as you prepare for your competition. They also have some video tutorials

You can visit the technet library rightaway and access all the resources by registering with your Windows Live Id.

2. Sample IT Questions:

You can also test your knowledge and get a taste of the questions that can appear by giving these practice quizes. They are usually questions which have answers in the from of multiple choice A,B,C,D. To see the answer for each, click on the "Answer" link below each question.

3. IT Challenge Forums

Be active in the IT Challenge Forums. There are many microsoft mentors interacting on a regular basis, giving last minute tips and links to more learning resources. There are also students who have qualified in the first round. So it serves as a great portal. Also when you are not able to login during your exams, you can post your error codes there and there is a chance that people might guide you if you get stuck sumwhere.

Link to the IT challenge Forums :

Tips: Make sure you go through all the stuff in the reference library, be active in the IT challenge forums to get last minute tips. And make sure that you have registered succesfully and filled all your profile information. You should see the 'compete button' when you are done.

P.S:- The questions are usually tricky and practical oriented. So take your time. My personal experience while giving quiz 2b was not that great. So be prepared very well in advance.
There are lots of bugs in the IT challenge homepage. There are times when you can't appear for the test. I have experienced problems with the compete button. So make sure, you understand the website and do not get stuck mid-way. Make sure you save all your answers when appearing for the quiz.
